important for the Council to actively reflect the
demographics of the workplace (noting the need
for more activists).”
“Because of shifting demographics, there are
definitely shifting priorities. You should be able
to bring that to the Council,” Hewitt said.
“Nothing can change if we don’t know what’s
important to people - what their priorities are,”
said Hewitt. “You can be the voice for change.”

Case, an assembly and installation manufacturing engineer in the Boeing Everett factory,
chaired the subcommittee which reviewed results
and made recommendations.
The survey will help the committee determine
priorities. “You have to understand who your
population is, how many and what are their
concerns. Then we can figure out what we need
to do try to fill the need,” Case said.
The committee is looking at internal and external resources to help address issues that surfaced
in the survey comments. Case noted several survey respondents offered to help others struggling
with similar issues.
Recurring concerns in
• Difficulty in reporting/resolving data-
processing errors related to their military
• Frustrations with the Veterans
Administration (for health care)
• Uncertainty on how to translate skills
gained from service (leadership and
problem solving, for example) to their
resumes for Boeing
During Case’s deployment from January 2004
through April 2005, his family received his pay-
check and medical benefits as if he was still at
work. “It’s really nice to know Boeing people
were there to take care of us.”
The committee would like to hear from other
reservists and veterans who were also deployed
while working at Boeing and Spirit.
If you’re a SPEEA member and a veteran who
hasn’t taken the survey, go to www.speea.org
