Sharing labor’s agenda with lawmakers
OLYMPIA, Wash. - SPEEA members teamed up with more than 200 union members from across the state to meet with lawmakers in Olympia Feb. 2.
The Washington State Labor Council
(WSLC), AFL-CIO, organized the
meetings with senators, representatives
and their staff for the annual Legislative
Union members shared their personal
experiences related to WSLC’s “Shared
Prosperity” agenda. The agenda includes
opposition to ‘right-to-work’ laws that
weaken workers’ voice and support for
fixing discriminatory voting systems and
ensuring tax incentive accountability
actually creates jobs.
SPEEA members Mohammed Khan,
Daniel Peters and Rod Siders took part
in the conference, which included panel
discussions and guest speakers, in addition to the lawmakers’ office visits.
“I think it is important to reach out to our state lawmakers to tell our stories and to hopefully change
hearts and minds with issues that impact our fellow workers,” said Siders, an Everett Council Rep.
“We need more activity like this and more participation from new union activists.”
